2) Albany Theatre

The Empire was the former home of Coventry Universities Student Union Club. Due to its close links to the University, The Empire holds one official Student Union event per week on Wednesday nights (Strike Back), as well as sponsoring a number of clubs and societies.

Since it’s transformation from the much loved mainstay of the Coventry music scene ‘Taylor Johns,’ to a charitable organisation in August 2013, The Tin Music and Arts has gone from strength to strength. Named as a homage to the now sadly closed Tin Angel, The Tin Music and Art is committed to creating a thriving, artistic hub here at the Canal Basin and to be an active and positive influence for the community of Coventry as a whole – whether that be through our regular and successful live music nights, which sees us frequently booking established and international acts as well as local homegrown talent, or through our artist’s studio, our screen printing facilities and Community Space, which is used almost every day of the week for Tai Chi, Yoga and Kuchipudi Dance Class.

The Tin Music and Arts is based in two neighbouring building in the Canal Basin in Coventry.

The Coal Vaults are two 18th century former coal tunnels and Units 1-4 are newer buildings which were built as part of the canal basin redevelopment in the early 1990’s. The Basin features a bronze statue of the famous 18th-century canal engineer James Brindley – one of fifteen artworks commissioned from local artists for the Canal Art Trail which extends from the basin to Hawkesbury Junction.

Theatre Absolute is an independent multi award-winning theatre company in Coventry. Its home is a one-time fish and chip shop restaurant (formerly Fishy Moore's opposite Argos in City Arcade). It is now a unique and dynamic 50-seat flexible theatre space and the only professional Shop Front Theatre in the whole of the U.K. Since co-founders, producer Julia Negus and writer Chris O’Connell opened the Shop Front in 2009 in partnership with Coventry City Council; the company has had over 7500 people through the door of this once empty space. Theatre Absolute present new plays and live arts events in the Shop Front, created by themselves as well as hosting many writing and literacy programmes. The company also has visiting theatre companies bringing work to the Shop Front Theatre, such as Paines Plough (London) and the Birmingham Rep.
