Uncle Richard
Uncle Richard

Date: 01 June 2018 - 02 June 2018

Every day

Location: Shakespeare's Schoolroom and Guildhall Church Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 6HB

Time: 19:30

Travelling Players visit Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall. Tell-Tale Presents, famed for its witty takes on history, perform an entertaining and enlightening tale for all the family.

A troupe of travelling players will be journeying to Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall in Stratford-upon-Avon for a performance that celebrates the fascinating origins of English theatre. Tell-Tale Presents, famed for its witty takes on history, will be performing Uncle Richard, an entertaining and enlightening tale for all the family.

Set in 1502, Uncle Richard tells the tale of 11 year old Henry VIII, his mother Elizabeth of York and his exuberant tutor John Skelton as they try to piece together the mystery of Henry’s Uncles, the ‘Princes in the Tower’. As Henry begins to unravel the stories of The War of the Roses, he discovers that, when it comes to his great Uncle Richard III, no two tellings of the tale are ever quite the same!

The drama will unfold in the atmospheric surroundings of Stratford-upon-Avon’s Guildhall, an environment that would have seen many such performances when it played host to travelling players during the time William Shakespeare himself was studying in the first floor Schoolroom. A popular form of entertainment, touring companies would put on plays wherever they could find work, from taverns and guildhalls to private households before audiences of lords and dignitaries. The Guildhall was a regular venue for such performances and is the most likely place where Shakespeare himself would have first witnessed live theatre.

Taresh Solanki, Director of Tell-Tale Presents, says, “It’s incredible to be able to bring this production of Uncle Richard to this magical setting, the place where troupes of performers such as ours walked the boards centuries ago. We hope people enjoy our tale of history, intrigue and family strife as much as we’ve loved creating it.”
