A slice of the homemade 1940s: a Rising Café review

Delicious cake on offer at Rising Cafe, Coventry
Found in the gorgeous Old Cathedral Quarter of Coventry, it is a place which is definitely fitting of its location.
Yet another place in Coventry with a heart of substance, the Rising Café is the city centre’s Rising (sorry) star. The café is rated the top place to visit in the area on trip advisor and when reading the reviews it is easy to see why. However, don’t just take their word for it.
The café can be found in the scenic quarter of Coventry’s city centre, at the rear of the new Cathedral. The décor of the café is reminiscent of a time capsule – with 1940’s memorabilia and furniture; it feels like you have stepped into a war-time home. Armchairs, sofas and tables and chairs fill the space, with shelves of old fashioned cooking utensils dotted around the walls, many of which are up for sale.
The counter is at the far wall of the café and is the proud display of many delicious sweet treats, which change on a daily basis. With huge slabs of chocolate, coffee and walnut and lemon drizzle cake; thick wedges of buttery flapjacks and stodgy brownies and several types of crumbly cookies, you will be hard pressed to walk past without picking an afternoon snack.
From just taking a quick glance at the menu it is very clear to see that Rising take pride in the quality of their food, and delivering that food to all audiences, no matter what your budget. The menu features a very varied selection from hearty breakfast, filling salads, starters, afternoon tea – including an American inspired “slider” option, sandwiches, moreish desserts, a kid’s selection, and well fair plates (for just £2!). But don’t let the price fool you – the portion sizes are very generous. Sandwiches are served with salad and roasted vegetable crisps; the deli board (my choice of the day) came with a large baguette, chunks of cheese, several slices of cold meats, pickled onions, tomatoes and leafy greens. The choice that the café offers is quite remarkable considering the quality and homemade nature of the food; both of which make for a rather luxurious time on a shoe string budget. Yes to that!
Not only does the Rising Café serve up delicious food at a great price, you can feel good about spending your money there. The Rising Café is part of a greater scheme to support those in need during their time of recovery. The café is run by previously homeless and substance-addicted men and women, 100% of proceeds go directly towards funding their recovery, and that of many others around the country, in the charity work of Betel UK.
