Pastel parakeets and vintage china: a Vintea’s Tearoom review

After its incredible success, a visit to Vintea's Tearoom was on the top of my list...

Vintea’s opened in May 2012 in Leamington and they have, quite frankly, never looked back. Located just off the main parade, the small vintage tea shop has a strong, yet grown-up, Alice in Wonderland feel about it, with mismatched china cups, saucers, cutlery and teapots of several shapes, sizes and colours. The Nina Campbell Parakeet wallpaper is a complimentary backdrop for the Annie Sloan painted furniture, ranging from white florals to pink paisley, to blue and white polka dots; the word for their little tea room is none other than romantic.  

For a tea room, Vintea’s serves a pleasantly surprising varied menu, with savoury options for breakfast including the largest and perhaps most spectacular dish: the Vintea’s Breakfast Special; which includes fresh orange juice, low fat Greek yogurt with seasonal berries and granola, mini egg en cocotte served with brioche toast, small artisan baked roll with sausage or bacon and 2 mini pastries. And if you would like to add some bubbles, a Bucks Fizz or a Bloody Mary are potential additions - quite the breakfast and a half. Brunch offers another plethora of savoury dishes, including creamy garlic Portobello mushrooms served on sour-dough toast. For those after lunch, sandwiches and paninis are up for grabs with an equally lip-smacking range of options. For those with a sweet tooth, they have an impressive display of cake, separated into three traditional collections: English, Country and French. There is also a selection of gluten free and vegan cakes, the choice of which is changed regularly. A cream tea is also available for those wanting a scone with the usual trimmings of jam and clotted cream.

Upon my visit however, I chose to have one of their well-known and celebrated Afternoon Teas. With not being a great tea lover (one of many crosses to bear) I asked if it was possible to have a hot chocolate. I was told with a smile that this was more than possible and would I like white, mint, milk or dark. After making my choice (milk, of course) we didn’t have to wait too long to be served. My hot chocolate was served in a teapot, allowing me to have around 2 and ½ cups, which I thought was a nice touch and didn’t leave me feeling like my tea drinking counter parts had received more for their money. A selection of finger sandwiches, savoury nibbles and a plain scone (you are given the option of a plain or fruit scone) with clotted cream and strawberry preserve was presented to us on a vintage cake stand. Once this was all polished off, we were then asked what slice of cake we would like from either of the three collections. I chose the red velvet (always a sucker for some buttercream) and the slice we each received was very generous. If you can’t finish it, you can always have it boxed up for you to take away, but it’s needless to say I didn’t have this problem! A gentleman’s afternoon tea is also available, following a more savoury taste with finger sandwiches, a pork pie, Scotch egg, pâté & toast, and a plain or fruit scone with clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

The only thing to be aware of, as with any gloriously popular little gem like this, is it is probably best to book in advance if you can, to ensure that you get a seat.  

A nice addition to the Vintea’s offer is the options of hiring. You can hire Vintea’s Tea room for a party, including hen, birthday and baby showers and the store’s beautiful vintage china is also for hire if you would like to arrange your own fabulous afternoon tea.
