Steampunk at the herbert

Steampunk is coming to Coventry for an out of this world weekend from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 May.

The big weekend kicks off with The Coventry Steampunk Cabaret Show on Friday night at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. Saturday sees The Coventry Steampunk Carnival take over Millennium Place outside Coventry Transport Museum from 11am, with a specialist Steampunk Market inside the museum. There’s another show at the Herbert on Saturday night in the shape of The Coventry Steampunk Concert.

The weekend wraps up with more live entertainment and music on Millennium Place from 11am on the Sunday, and a final chance for some retail therapy, steampunk style at the market inside the museum. All of the daytime events are free to attend.

The line-up for the weekend has been selected by organiser David Smith to showcase a variety of musical and speciality acts that appeal to steampunk audiences. At the Steampunk Carnival, special mention has to be given to Ichabod Steam and his Animatronic Backing Band, who will be performing several times a day: there's a robot Bass Player, a Robot Drummer, and an Octopus that plays the keyboards. In addition, the Carnival will showcase the multi-talented Greg Chapman, Rivers and Kidd, Kiss Like Ether, London-based duo Moth, and The Pale Kings (Saturday only).

Friday night's Steampunk Cabaret Show is being compered by Greg Chapman, and features Rivers and Kidd, Kiss Like Ether, the glamourous Lux Delioux, and The Retro Clones.

Saturday night's Steampunk Concert has The Ineffable Lady M as your Mistress of Ceremonies and includes Pansy Cheung of Tailfeather Burlesque, London duo Victor and the Bully and freshly back from the USA, headline act, The Filthy Spectacula.

The two evening shows at the Herbert are ticketed and can be booked online at www.theherbert.org and are suitable for over 18s.

So, what on earth is steampunk?

  • Steampunk can be described as Victorian Retro Futuristic Science Fiction. It takes the best elements of high Victorian Science Fiction such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells and re-imagines them for today and tomorrow.
  • Steampunk is where your imagination can take flight with absolutely no boundaries or restrictions.
  • The term "Steampunk" was coined by sci-fi author Kevin Jeter to try and describe his retro-tech style.
  • The style can be found in 1950s adaptations of Around The World In 80 Days and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and more recently in films like The Golden Compass and Alice In Wonderland.
  • It is easy to join in with Steampunk, as there is no huge outlay required and absolutely EVERYTHING is both acceptable and potentially splendid - the basics are probably in your grandad's or granny's wardrobe or the local charity shop. There is no right or wrong!
